INglish hoo mein

Reading isn’t one of the best things I would like to do on an off day, left it all back in school. I would always admire those who read a lot but then I thought it’s only a function of when you don’t do something you tend to get fascinated by it. Bought books on arts, fiction, etc but could never reach the last page , I blamed it on my lack of concentration, which isn’t my fault cause I strongly believe concentration is also a function of inheritance, I see a lot of my father in me.

The finest language is mostly made up of simple unimposing words.
George Eliot

I am not really trying to talk about my reading habits but where I am trying to get is about simplicity and expressions. As a child I was imbibed with thoughts that I must write good English in order to learn a living. The thought today is funny and bizarre .Each morning my grandfather would ask us to read one of the most boring and difficult to understand kind of articles, well his motive behind that was pretty simple "its to get you into reading habit" but I possibly could not take it in the same manner .To me news papers perhaps became one of the most horrific element to face every morning because my understanding about a news paper was ,only about good vocabulary and that’s it .Now my million dollar question was in understanding ,what is good vocabulary mean really how would you pick up few words and say .. Hmm that’s a fine word, not too long I figured out, words unheard of make it to the class, and if that so then think about it one may use a difficult word only so the other person does not understand him. How stupid of the most intelligent species on the planet earth , remember we are going our ancestor ways killing the gift of language it is a reverse way to evolution, communication is dying and we are making things difficult to understand. Few articles which I would completely not understand were called masterpiece writing, so here then I conclude often something’s you don’t understand is called masterpiece.

Why I harp a lot on English is because this is one of the language which has refrained me from not only writing but my expressions and thoughts (especially in our country) .Writing as I see is an expression of the mood and not the function of a particular language. Language has a simple job to do, make things simpler and understandable.

[Writing is] largely a matter of application and hard work, or writing and rewriting endlessly until you are satisfied that you have said what you want to say as clearly and simply as possible. For me that usually means many, many revisions.
Rachel Carson, Author of Silent Spring

  2. Dear Rahul

I fully agree with the view expressed herein above. I also feel that a language, may it be french, german, english, hindi or for that matter our 'bhojpuuri' or 'maithili', serves the same purpose of being a means of communication in between two persons. It never requires to be very 'Shakespearean' to be effective or impressive. Good english or for that matter any other language surely is good to hear but is not at all a necessity for basic communication or writting. I personaaly feel that language should be simple and understandable. Its more of our hypocricy and dogmatic attitude which makes us feel that until and unless you use latin or greek phrases or speak in american or english assent, your english is not good and effective. I feel people having such attitude and feeling need to do an introspection and realize that what exactly do they want to acieve by speaking in 'english'. Do they want english to be a means of communication for them or do they want to acquire 'pseudo social staus' and 'pride' of being able to speak in 'english'. Friends, let's be practical and approach our lives with much more practical attitude and try to achieve something which serves our purpose and adds value to our lives. Let's speak a labguage which helps us communicate and express ourseleves. That's it. I hope I have been able to express the need and necessity of a language.

  4. Rahul,
I am responding here since for some reasons not being able to see the invite on my gmail... pls send an invite on pranrai@gmail.com... Let me start thanking you for taking this initiative...Silently but surely you are bringing team Mokamah in more cohesive manner.. kudos

My two cents on the the initial article as well as the new one :

First blog "Mumbai" : Its a statement from heart of an youngster who has turned matured.through practicality. Your eexpresssion of thoughts are straaight from your heart and believe me it strikes the right cords..

I really appreciate the fact you a very stable head . ... statement " I am not here to change" signifies the fact you are reaally at the right place at right time.... Even in Marriage initially one tries to chaange habitss of other partner BUT the true bonding happens when you accept each other as it is and you'll alayss feel you are with the right partner. I want to confess.. I have been struggling in my professional life ddue to the attitude of wanting to bring the change and many a times have reflected back may be its me who hass to merge..... DON't get overboard... But after 10 yrs of marriage this is something I admit admiring in each one of you ( True Team Mokamah) I am confident you'll go great gunss since you are in peaace with what you are doing.. thank God for helping you.
Finally special mention for your selection of words .. its not words but while reaading I felt it was an honest expression.

Read comments of Ashishji, Chunnuji, Sweta , Yash and could visualize how each one of could relate....

On Reading : Yours comments suggests an youngster wants to protest and why not where as Ashishji has give a true wrapper to complete it. I realised its want you want to be & what you visualize to be is what you want to read/hear... At least In my case I pick up books which relate with my lifes struggle and believe me it gives a kick. On INglish & Hindi etc The best sattement I enjoyed was ... while taking to one of my American colleague... I realized my pronounciation was difficult for him to grasp.. an on my explanation he responsed ..hey Pranav You speak English ..its an honour since we never learned Hindi so why bother abt pronunciation... Once you read my comments you'll realize its not the right enlish...I write the way I talk and at times it is difficult but then yaar kahin to Bhartiya apni tarah is likhega... Though I disagree from Newspaper part.. Lets see the other side... Again it forces us to read varied thoughts, opinions & exposes us to orld beyond what we are comfortable... Buts NOT American papers ... I still feel "The Statesman " one of the newspaper from my childhood days allowed expression of thoughts the way a challenger would look towards the winner after losing on points.... Team keep blogging.. OM
